The Snow is Coming; “La Niña” Explained.

As winter approaches Oregon, meteorologists are tracking a significant weather pattern that could mean big changes for the state's winter conditions. La Niña, a complex climate phenomenon, is expected to impact snowfall and temperatures across the Pacific Northwest.

What is La Niña?

La Niña occurs when sea surface temperatures in the equatorial Pacific Ocean become cooler than average. This temperature shift triggers widespread changes in atmospheric circulation, dramatically influencing weather patterns across North America. What does this mean? Well, while southern states will see a warmer and drier than usual winter, the North will experience lower temps and more precipitation.

What does this mean for skiers/boarders in Oregon?

For Oregon, La Niña typically means:

  • Cooler temps

  • More rain in town

  • More snowfall at elevation

While it’s likely to be a wet, cold winter in town, La Niña in the Northwest typically means a better snowpack and more consistent conditions in the mountains.

Every La Niña winter is different, so at this point in the season all we can do is cross our fingers and hope for a good season of deep snow, and low temps.
