Gearing up for Your First Mountain Bike Ride.
Been thinking about giving mountain biking a shot?
Here’s a comprehensive list of every piece of gear you’ll need for your first mountain bike ride
(Items that can be found lightly-used at EGT will be marked with a “*”)
Bike*
Obviously, you’ll need a bike, and not your dad’s old beach-cruiser. You’ll want some suspension, at least in the front, as well as some thick, well-tredded grippy tires. Due to the size of our shop, we only consign high-quality full-suspension mountain bikes, although exceptions are made for rad hard-tails.
Helmet*
Wearing a helmet is absolutely necessary for mountain biking. Whether you’re going all out with a full-face lid, or your standard visored mtb helmet, you’ll want to protect your dome from the sharp rocks, hard roots, and trees that you’ll find on every trail. You can often find brand-new or lightly used helmets at EGT that have passed our safety inspection.
Athletic Clothes*
Athletic clothes aren’t completely necessary, but they’re nice to have. If you’re pedaling on a hot day, you’ll want some breathable shorts and a short-sleeve top. If you’re biking in the rain, you’ll want some waterproof pants, and rain jacket, that’re easy to crouch and move around in. The shop always has plenty of mountain-bike-specific technical apparel for both men and women.
Flat-Soled Shoes*
Don’t go out riding in your tilted running shoes. They might be comfy for your arches, but flat soled shoes, made for skating, bmx, or mountain-bike-specific, allow for easy foot placement, and movement on your pedals. Trust me, this makes a huge difference.
Grippy Pedals*
Having a grippy set of pedals is essential for having a good time, and staying upright on rowdy trails. Unlike stock pedals from the factory, a good pair of pedals will come equipped with pins that stick out on both sides. They dig into the soles of your shoes, allowing maximum grip, even with poor foot placement.
